Is multiple myeloma (MM) curable?
Is multiple myeloma (MM) curable?
Answer: Multiple myeloma refers to cancer that forms in a particular type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Cancer cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells. Rather than produce normal antibodies acting against infections, the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause a wide range of complications. Multiple myeloma is generally considered an incurable disease. However, this hematologic condition can be successfully treated, resulting in an improved quality of life. Treatment might include several options, depending on disease severity and progression. Standard treatment options include targeted therapy, biological therapy, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, bone marrow transplant and radiation therapy.
